God turns the enemy’s weapons against them
I went to a fundraising event last night and as I listened to the speaker, I heard something that I had never recognized in all the times I had read or heard the story of David defeating Goliath. David knocked Goliath down with the smooth stones and his slingshot, but as he lay on the ground he cut his head off with his own sword. What the enemy intended for harm, God turned as a weapon against the enemy. How did I miss this? I always focused on the size difference and how David was an unexpected warrior. I focused on David’s trust in God knowing that God would give him a victory over this giant. I never thought of how this story relates to this recent season in my life-that what the enemy means for harm, God will use for good. Wow! “David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head…So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.” (1 Samuel 17: 45-46, 50-51, NIV)
Imagine young David, when he saw the giant Goliath, he did not see defeat, but victory because of his faith in God. The enemy did not instill fear, instead, David believed and declared God’s victory when others thought it impossible. How many times have you felt beaten, defeated, or that there is seemingly no end to the challenges and suffering? What if instead of seeing unending defeat, you declared God’s victory? What if you saw the weapons the enemy uses against you as God’s weapons to bring Him ultimate victory?
This recognition of God’s power is what has kept me focused on trusting God and knowing my story is not fully written. God still has the pen. In this season of abundance, I recognize the enemy has continually tried to pull me away from faith. But the enemy will not take away the victory that I have already declared for our Heavenly Father. The weapons meant to harm me, will be my testimony. They will bring God’s glory to others. They already have. Very few people know my entire story, but those that know parts of the last three years cannot help but recognize God’s peace and comfort that has kept me hopeful and prayerful through it all. What the enemy has meant for evil, has become a testimony to others to encourage them to persevere and trust in God. Who knows the journey of all the chapters of this book other than God. What I do know is the ending-and that ends in God’s victory over the enemy and life everlasting.
Today, I pray that you go back and read the story of David and Goliath with a new perspective. I pray that you hunger to learn more and read more in the Bible and that you really read familiar stories-you may find something new!
