No idle chatter in the Moore household
The weekend started with a few simple words from Rob- we are going to tackle the boxes in the garage. When I heard these words and looked at our garage filled with moving boxes, I felt we had a near impossible task before us. There was no way we were going to go through 19 years of boxes in one weekend. Saturday morning came early as we worked to beat the rain and take advantage of being able to use the driveway to sort through the boxes and at least make lanes where we could walk in and out of the garage. The hours seemed to slip away as my frustration in weak and broken cardboard boxes escalated with every rip or tear of a handle or crushed box found at the bottom of a pile. I lost count of the trips Rob made to the dumpster and couldn’t believe how much artwork and books we owned! That day ended with a truckload of items to donate under a tarp held down creatively since we had yet to find all our tie downs. The next day felt like rinse and repeat. We started early and all the progress made the prior day seemed to disappear as we continued to sort through the remaining boxes. Before long, we not only had paths in the garage, we had sorted all that remained and cleared out more truckloads of trash and donations. The impossible was accomplished. “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14: 23, NIV). The Moore family doesn’t have idle chatter in our vocabulary. While Rob and I tackled the garage, the girls tackled their rooms…our house is feeling like a home!
Have you ever spent so much time planning and talking about what you would do that one day you find that you never took the first step or action? Spoiler alert on the movie “Up”. I think about how heartbreaking it was that he and his wife talked and planned their entire lives together about traveling, but never did. It is also one of my favorite lessons from the movie a “Bug’s Life” when the hard working ants finally reap the rewards of their hard labor and overcome their fear of the intimidating grasshoppers that did no work.
Our family gets a bit of a laugh at our comment of this will be a trip of a lifetime because they all seem to be trips of a lifetime. Maybe its a result of near death experiences or experiencing and surviving combat, but Rob and I are not the people that will talk about what we will do, we just do. It’s what made us to decide to go to Israel within 90 days of the start of the trip that others had planned for over a year. It’s what took us across the world to scuba dive in Galapagos and Indonesia when the opportunity presented itself. It’s what made us say yes to our new home. All of these are the rewards of hard work. I don’t believe God wants us to work without ceasing, as Proverbs 14:23 reminds us, it’s being idle and merely talking that God cautions us against. We should enjoy the profits and rewards of the hard work.
We did just that today- at the end of the day, we looked at what we accomplished and we rested and settled into our new home that feels a little more like us each day.
Today, I pray that you skip the idle chatter and get to work. Go do amazing things and reap the rewards of that labor-don’t wait to enjoy all that you have earned!
