We thrive in crisis
I am blessed to both work for one of the largest utility companies in the nation as well as serve in the military. In both these roles, when natural disaster crises arise, we are often at the forefront. I get to be a part of amazing teams that step outside of their day to day roles and orchestrate the most complex of responses while keeping our communities calm in the storms. Today, as I traveled from site to site, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride at my teammates, many of whom had to leave their homes to ensure the safety and well being of the greater community. They are the humble servants that give of themselves so others will have power, clear transportation routes, necessary supplies, and be comforted in the warmth of their homes. I have seen these same teammates respond to devastating hurricanes and work countless hours to turn the lights back while knowing they lost everything in their own home. I have seen these same teammates beg not to leave until the job is completely done and all is restored back to normal. So yes, I am blessed to be part of such amazing teams.
Jesus told the disciples and the crowds that surrounded Him that “the greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Matthew 23:11-12, NIV). You won’t hear any of these humble servants bragging about how many customers they brought back online and in what period, you will not hear any of these soldiers bragging about how many stranded motorists they saved in the storm. They simply do their mission, day in and day out, not seeking glory or fame. It is not about the rewards or mony earned, it is about being more than self and helping your fellow man. These are our servants that will be exalted for their deeds that are clearly seen but not always acknowledged. These are the servants that enable me to rest my head on my pillow tonight knowing that we have all we can do to prepare, and now we wait…and pray for a non event!
Today, I pray that you take a moment to thank those humble servants who don’t seek glory but continue to sacrifice self for the good of the many. I pray that if you are one of those humble servants, that you know you are appreciated and exalted. God Bless you!
