During a recent discussion in the Lysa Terkeurst Bible Study “Making Peace with What I Cannot Control”, a biblical verse resonated with me. I went back and read further and I couldn’t help but have this image of God as our Father who is always there with us holding our hand. The verse is Psalms 139:10, “even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast”. I immediately saw how Rob would hold the girls hands, one on each side, throughout their entire lives. The comfort and peace found in not only a father’s presence, but the warmth of his hand wrapped around yours is unmatched. That is how God is to us at all times. I encourage you to read further in Psalms 139, it highlights how our Father, our God, knows us. He knows our thoughts, He knows our actions. We can try to flee or go across the world, but He is always there holding our right hand and not letting go. Even when darkness surrounds us, He brings forth the light. Isn’t that imagery beautiful, comforting?
What if in your darkest days, the days when you find it hard to get out of bed, you pictured God right beside you holding your right hand. You don’t have to imagine it, He is there with you, always. Would that give you the strength to stand up and face whatever the day has in store for you? There is nothing that you are facing, nothing you will encounter, where God will not be with you. He knows you, personally, and He will not leave you. It doesn’t mean the path you take will not be uphill or rocky at times, it doesn’t mean that every day will be joyous. It does mean that you can take comfort knowing He is always with you, even in the rough patches.
This is how I move through the chaos that life sometimes throws my way. Whether it be physical or emotional pain, I find comfort in Him. Maybe you never had an earthly father to hold your hand and never leave your side. Maybe “home” was far from comforting. Trust in God, turn to Him, he is the Father that will not abandon. He will not leave you, in the difficult and easy days. You are never alone.
Today, I pray you take comfort knowing God will never leave you alone. I pray in the hard days, you look down at your right hand and know and feel His hand wrapped around yours.
