Use your gifts

This past week, I have spent time with caregivers and have been humbled by their selfless hearts. I have heard of calls in the middle of the night resulting in immediate flights across the U.S. to be by the side of the patient when needed. I have heard of planned short visits resulting in enduring stays to ensure the support needed is received. I have seen a parent giving all that they are to a sick child at the sacrifice of self over and over again. I have seen the angels on earth in hospice nurses that provide the comfort and support needed by families over and over again knowing the pain and suffering they will see with each engagement. I have seen a daughter going to the bedside of a parent injured and requiring surgery while caring for her own child. Their strength and perseverance are immeasurable. It amazes me that there is room in their chest for the size of their hearts. I am in awe of their gifts, I am in awe of their sacrifice day after day ensuring necessary care is there when needed.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10, NIV) When Peter wrote these words, he reminded God’s children to “love each other deeply” and to “offer hospitality to one another without grumbling” (1 Peter 4:8-9, NIV). I read these words and I can’t help see the symbology of our caregivers. They give of themselves, they sacrifice. They often hold their tongues to their own suffering and troubles due to their commitment and dedication to those in need. They use their gifts to serve others. What an amazing example of God’s grace.

Our family chatted at the dinner table one day and I asked the kids who would be the one to take care of their dad and I as we got older-all of them spoke in unison and said Helena. We all laughed, but it was true. It takes a special God gift to be a caregiver, not all of us have that gift. Those that do, I thank you for all you do for others. I thank you for your sacrifice and being a symbol of God’s grace.

Today, I pray that you say a word of thanks to the caregivers in your life-whether short term or long term. I pray that if you have this God gift, that you use it to serve others and in doing so, show God’s grace here on earth.

I pray these words spoke to you, help spread God’s word and share with a friend. Subscribe to my web page to not miss a blog.
