Listening to God’s guidance
There have been times in my life when I felt God’s nudge and did not respond. It led to missed opportunities and sadly, to the loss of a friend without a final goodbye. I no longer ignore the nudges.
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life” (Psalms 143:8, NIV). God reminds us to trust Him and to follow where He guides us. He doesn’t say follow when it’s convenient or when it is what I want to do or when it benefits me. He reminds us to put our trust in Him, completely. He reminds us that we should seek His guidance on where we should go-what we should do.
Rob had a recent encounter last week where someone began to share their tragic story of loss and it reminded him a lot of his own story. He could have sat there quietly, he could have chosen to not engage, but he felt that nudge. And then he spoke…and his words let this woman who had lost her son know that she did not stand alone. It let her know, from a complete stranger, that someone cared for her and her suffering and that the life of her son mattered. That’s listening to the God nudge and being vulnerable even when it is uncomfortable.
My favorite ministry in our church is our quilt ministry. The ladies from our church gather together and make beautiful quilts as they pray over every stitch. I became a recipient of one after my shoulder surgery, Rob’s mom after her heart surgery, and Rob after his hip surgery. I may be the frequent flyer on these quilts. Whenever I hear of someone that is undergoing treatment, surgery, or dealing with tragic loss, I know just what to do. I go to this special little gem of a cabin, and there, on a table, stands a rainbow of quilts sorted and packaged by our amazing ladies. I always know the name of the person that will receive the quilt but I don’t often know much more about them. I always pray as I select the quilt and I usually find the “right” one quickly. Without fail, I always get word back from the recipient that I picked their favorite color or how perfect the quilt is and how much it gives the recipient hope when they are surrounded in love and prayer. I don’t always know if the recipient believes in God, it is enough that I do. I have never had one sent back- that’s listening to the God nudges.
Today, I pray that you listen to the God nudges. I pray that you put your trust in God daily and you follow where He guides you.
