Just a little reminder

As I sat in prayer this evening I came to 1 Corinthians and it reminded me of the different ways we can and should meet people where they are. Paul reminds us that he chose to meet people where they are in order to bring them to salvation. He says that “To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law, so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law, so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Corinthians 9:19-22, NIV). On the surface, this may seem as if Paul is a chameleon that changes based on his environment in order to bring others to Christ. It may seem like he is not sincere or truthful to who he is. I argue that Paul remains truthful to who he is and he is a child of God that is meeting them where they are to help them see where they could be. He does not turn his back on God and follow other laws or traditions, he is simply respectful of the environment of those he is seeking to draw closer to God. Shouldn’t we do the same? Should we only speak to fellow believers or should we be bold and seek people where they are to show them how God works in our lives?

I have a dear friend that bought at least 100 of these tiny Jesus dolls. She carries them with her wherever she goes and will leave them in random spots. She might leave them on the top of a picture frame hanging on a wall, with a paid receipt at a restaurant, or at a receptionist desk. It’s a little thing, a little reminder to those that see it. She doesn’t just leave them in church parking lots or pews, she leaves them everywhere! Who knows how many people she has drawn closer to God with this little gesture. Maybe it was someone who has been struggling in their faith and sees this as a message just for them to come back home. Maybe it’s someone who has no clue what this doll is and goes to the all knowing google with an internet search and is drawn deeper into studying and understanding the life of Jesus. Maybe a child picks it up and it draws them into conversation with their family and they all dig deeper and learn more about our faith. We never know how these little reminders will impact those around us…what we do know is that there will be no impact if we do not engage, if we do not try.

I don’t know about you, but I want to go buy a bag of these miniature Jesus dolls and be bold in my faith!

Today, I pray that you are encouraged to meet people where they are and not wait for them to come to you. I pray that you share your stories and your testimony, you may find you have much more in common with those that seemed so far from you before you started talking about God.
