A cheerful heart
I don’t know about you, but days where I have long meetings can be draining. Even more draining when it is a few days back to back. This has been one of those weeks! On days, weeks, like this, I find great comfort and uplifting in laughter. “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, NIV). It is so easy to focus on the long days, and as noted in the Proverb, find yourself drained of life as the sun begins to set. Instead, our team found laughter throughout yesterday and today. It makes the days not just bearable, but enjoyable-cheerful.
Recently, we have had quite a bit of change in our team. Some of us have known each other for years, others, we have just met. That dynamic often makes it difficult to be comfortable, to trust. Not this team. In no time at all, we have developed a bond that others immediately notice. There is shared laughter, even when other parts of the day may feel discouraging. This team has, and will , continue to lift each other up and share our “good medicine” so that our spirit’s do not fade away. It is rare when you can find those connections. It is something to be treasured and appreciated.
I have served on teams that could only be defined as toxic. Even in those teams, although the leaders were toxic, the team found ways to maintain our cheerful hearts…some might call it shared suffering! As God reminds us, it’s all about your perception. You can choose how you respond to your surroundings-that, you can control. You can let situations steal your cheerful heart and drain your spirit, or hold on to what brings you joy, your good medicine.
Today, I pray that you surround yourself with cheerful hearts. I pray that when you find yourself being crushed and drained, that you find that little thing that makes you smile. Find your good medicine.
