Our Father
When I think of praying to God, I always have the image of a father. I acknowledge that He is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost-the Trinity, but when I pray, in my mind, I see God as my Father. Although that may seem simple, it becomes a bit challenging when my image of a father is far from the image of God.
I know I am not unique when I share that I did not have an ideal father. I did not have a father that would bandage a busted knee, or hold me on his lap and comfort me when tears would slowly fall down my face. I did not have a father that I could turn to when I was scared or a father that protected me from all things including the things that go bump in the night.
As I started building my relationship with God, I had to first change my personal image of a father. You see, God our Father is always with you. He knows you better than you know yourself. He already knows your pain and your cares before you can even vocalize it is prayer. He sees in you everything that is possible and not your limitations you place on yourself. He loves you, really loves you.
My Heavenly Father is much more than any one human could ever be- He is my strength, He is my savior. This view of God as my Father became clearer as my life encountered challenges and He was always there. I felt Him bandage my wounds and my heart when it was broken, I felt Him comfort me as the tears streamed down my face as I fell to my knees completely lost. I called to Him in prayer when I was scared and felt the peace that only comes from God.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3, NIV).
Today, I pray that regardless of your image of a father that you find your comfort in God our Father. I pray that you turn to Him and see Him as an ever present, and ever loving Father. God, your Father, will not abandon you.
