Do not worry about tomorrow

If you have not read any of John Eldredge’s books, I recommend you go and read one. I recently read “Resilient”and although there are many great nuggets on resiliency, one of the items that resonated with me was about worry. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34, NIV). Eldredge reminds us that “do not worry” is a command from God.

I love how God works and how what others may see as coincidence, I see as not so subtle Godwinks. This weekend I found myself dwelling in worry. I started worrying about the girls and how the world we live in and all our relationships would affect them in the future. How would it impact their future relationships? Would they ever feel loved for who they are? Have I prepared them for what the world is going to throw at them? I know you moms and dads out there have probably felt similar worry.

I then picked up this book and saw this in the very next chapter. God doesn’t suggest that we not worry, he commands us to not worry. I love the verse in Matthew that reminds us that we should not only not worry about tomorrow but focuses us on living in today, the right now. That is enough for us, do not be seeking or creating trouble, but be present in the here and now. God also reminds us to “forget the former things; do not dwell on the past” (Isaiah 43:18, NIV). AS Eldredge mentioned, these are not suggestions but commands from God. We are not to dwell in the past on the things we cannot change nor are we to worry about the future for the things we cannot predict. Instead, we are to live in the here and now- God is the author of our story, not us.

Today, I pray that you be present in your everyday and when you find yourself dwelling in the past or worrying about the future that you refocus on the here and now. I pray that you never forget that God is the author of your story, He knows the beginning and the end.

Thank you! So glad the message resonated with you. It really changed the way I look at this when I saw this as a Command from God versus suggestion.
