The kind of friends we all need
In my Guidepost devotional today, this simple verse reminded me how these are the kind of friends we should all have around us. “Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today” (Luke 5:26, NIV). The rest of the story? I am sure many of you are familiar with the friends that climbed on a roof to lower their paralyzed friend into the house where Jesus stood when they were not able to get him in the door through the crowd. Jesus does not state he is healed, instead, He says his sins are forgiven…how is that for miraculous healing and clear display of Jesus authority here on earth? He has the power to not only heal physical ailments, but to heal our soul, to forgive us of our sins. Jesus then tells the man to walk, and he did.
I can picture the entire scene in my mind. I can imagine the journey to the house as these friends carried their paralyzed friend between them. I can imagine their excitement thinking that Jesus would heal their friend and I can feel their disappointment when they arrived to the crowds and not being able to enter the home. I can also imagine the friends that would NOT give up and came up with the seemingly crazy idea to climb on the roof. I am sure words like “trust us” escaped their lips as they worked together to lift their friend. I don’t know about you, but I have had those friends in my life. I have reached the lowest points and lost the energy to pray, and without hesitation, not only have they prayed for me and called others to pray, they have prayed with me. Those are the kind of friends we all need, and as importantly, those are the friends we need to be.
Today I pray that you surround yourself with those friends that would climb a roof (or race down a mountain to grab an oxygen tank, pray over you as you were rushed down the steep slope, or speak words of encouragement reminding you of all that you have to live for), to be with you in your troubled times and seek healing when you may have given up. I pray for the forgiveness of all our sins and for miraculous healing. Above all, I pray that we never lose sight of God’s authority here on earth.
