Value others above yourself

Today’s verse came from the letter from the Apostle Paul to the Christian church in Philippi. He calls the church to imitate Christ’s humility. He asks them that if they are encouraged or comforted by God’s love, that they should have the same love and be like minded. (Philippians 2:1-2). I love that Paul calls them to be humble and to “value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3). What simple guidance, value others above yourself.

This is something we have tried to instill in all our kids and something that Rob and I try to practice in how we live our lives. One of the stories that resonates with me as I read this reminded me of my first short story published in a book by Susan King. Rob and I were on a scuba trip and ran into a man named John. Throughout the trip, we became quick friends and when we found out he lived alone, we invited him to our home over the Thanksgiving Holiday. It’s our favorite holiday and we usually host 3-4 Thanksgiving dinners and it has become our annual tradition that not only kicks off our holiday season, but the season of all those who participate. John not only joined us for a dinner, but stayed with us and it was the beginning of a special connection that has continued to strengthen through the years. It all began from a simple invite to open our home so he would not be alone over the holidays.

I think my daughters would sometimes say that I put the needs of others above myself too much. I get lectured when I take them to Starbucks and never get anything for myself, or we go to get frozen custard and I get something for the family and pups but skip on a purchase for me. It’s these simple things of focusing on their interests that fills my cup-I don’t need that coffee or custard to find my joy.

John is now “Uncle John” and a dear friend who is building a spectacular home with amazing views in Virginia…I have no doubt that we will share many meals in that home when it’s finished. John is also the one that picked Rob up on the App trail and drove him hours each way just so he could see us for a night. God’s love is contagious! Today I pray that you look to the needs of others before self. In doing so, I think you will see rewards in ways beyond your imagination.
