It’s the little things

Have you ever had one of those days where you just didn’t feel like adulting? That was my day today. Maybe it was the crash after three amazing days-I just didn’t want to take on the day and the thought of staying snuggled in bed and loving on my pups was quite appealing. But that’s not a choice is it? We can’t just choose to not engage. Too many people expect you to be present, there are too many things to be done on any given day-we can’t just stop no matter how strong the desire to disappear, if even only for a day.

I can’t help but imagine Moses leading the people of Israel through the wilderness for 40 years. He had to have some of these days. As he came down the mountain with the two tablets that were the work of God and encountered the golden calf and dancing, he must have had one of those days. When the people complained that they were thirsty and questioned why Moses took them out of Egypt, he must have had one of those days. Adulting is hard, but like Moses, we have to get up and face the day, much is expected of us and sometimes, life surprises us with little moments to reward our commitment, to reward our resilience. Sometimes, you may not personally reap the reward of your efforts, but you can stand on a mountain and see with your own eyes what your obedience and effort have achieved.

So, today, I adulted. I got up, I put my game face on and I went to work. As the day progressed, every step got a little easier and then one of those little moments happened. A dear friend that has gone through more than anyone should of late, one that I know has had many of these days, brought me this moment. She pulled a small duck out of her bag and she said it reminded her of me. It wasn’t just any duck, it was an Army duck with one star on its helmet. He is now BG Duck, and he was my little moment that I desperately needed today.

Today, I pray that even in the days that are hard to face, that you look for those little moments, those little affirmations, no matter how small, that encourage you to face the next hard day.
