Just a short little hike

As I look back on what started this, I realize that it was my “good idea” to help one of my soldiers to get his wife to go on the hike of a lifetime with him. In the convincing, I signed Rob and I to do the same hike. So, today marks a few weeks before we will be starting our trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro and this morning was one of our many training hikes (training that in typical Moore family form started a couple of weeks ago).

It was a beautiful day to spend time together and catch up on the last two days when I attended the She Speaks Conference. What better time to brainstorm and talk through my homework assignments than when I am focusing on putting one trek pole in front of the other knowing we still have miles to go before we rest.

Rob let me ramble and interjected a comment here and there to encourage me to continue down the path of discovering who is my reader. Several of us at the conference shared how difficult it is to narrow down your niche, who is your reader? A thought kept repeating in my head that what we do is not who we are. It is something I have battled throughout my military career whether it be in war, in peacetime, or as a military spouse. As we talked, my reader became clearer.

I write for the soldier (service member) to help them see that what they do does not define who they are so they can stay true to their faith and beliefs while continuing to serve their nation.

As we “strolled” I felt encouraged by Jesus’ words when he was challenged by the Pharisees. He boldly stated that He knows where He comes from and where He is going. He declared that He is “the light of the world. Whoever follows (Him) will never walk in darkness ,but will have the light of life” (John 8:12-14). I serve as a soldier, but who I am is a child of God. In that identity, I will always have the light of life.

Today, I pray that you take comfort in these words and are reminded to stand with God in all things. I pray that you never lose sight of who you are or feel pressured to lose or change that identity to achieve titles or for what you think people expect you to do or say. I pray that you never lose sight that you are a child of God.
