A Day of Proverbs and Mama Bears

Today has been a day of Proverbs. It wasn’t a hard day, but it was an emotional day. I try at all times to lead by example and for my children to see that when I ask them to lead with love it is not something I am not willing to do myself. I truly felt the devil testing me in that space today.

This one is for the moms out there, the ones that have had mama bear come out to protect their young against all odds…you know who you are.

I am the peacemaker in our home, I think the entire family would agree with that title. As the peacemaker, I can usually calm any storm that comes our way and encourage anyone of us that feel offended or slighted to see things from the perspective of the other person and usually find a mutual treaty and forgiveness. Our family, like many of yours, have been tested by many things from illness, PTSD, addiction, anger, harmful words- the list goes on. Today, we were tested and today, I stand encouraged that all that effort to show my children how to behave and not just tell them hollow words stood against the challenge and came out victorious.

As a parent you want to be able to protect your child from any potential harm. You want them to choose the path in life that will minimize their pain or any loss they may encounter…but we cannot. It is beyond our power-but with God, they can find a peace through those difficult times and be comforted through those moments as they move through them. Today, I was thankful for the relationship one of my children has with God. I knew that even if I could not be in the room with her, or hold her hand throughout the day as she faced her difficult day, that not only did she know I was there in spirit, but she also knew God had her in His hands…and she persevered. Not only did she persevere, she was a resounding child of God that did not falter as she learned what it means to be a mama bear herself…and she was never alone.

God encourages the righteous. Proverbs was not a book that I would reference until I studied it in my theology class. Now, it has become my go to when I need encouragement. He reminds us that “no one can be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted” and “the wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm” (Proverbs 12:3, 7, NIV). What mighty words of encouragement, no matter the power that those with wicked intentions may seem to have in the moment, there is no place for them in the house of the Lord. In the end, those with ill intent will fail and those that commit to the life of the righteous will prevail. Life is full of battles and we have to take each one as they come, but we already know the victor of this war.

Today, I pray that you never lose sight of the foundation God has built with you. I pray that you do not succumb to the behaviors of those with wicked intent and that you hold true to yourself and to your faith when challenged-and you will be challenged. Today, I pray for all the mama bears- I know you and your strength is beyond measure.

Even when they make decisions that are different than you might, it’s a blessing to know the foundation on which they stand and the trust in the Holy Spirit in their lives!

It gets a little scary as a parent- something they will not understand until they become parents themselves. I remember a time not too long ago when a dear friend shared that she dreamt of our kids and they were all in bubbles as they were going throughout their day- they were covered in prayers. That image brought me a peace I had not felt before- God’s always with them even when we cannot physically be there.
